1980 - 1985 Purdue University, At the request of the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, implemented a summer grant development seminar. Ten junior faculty were selected in a competitive process, and each received a summer stipend to develop a grant proposal. Dr. Maurana worked with each faculty member; 7 of 10 received external peer-reviewed funding in the following year.
1991 - 1995 Wright State University, Chair of the Multiprofessional Health Professions Education Task Force (with members from seven different disciplines). Developed a series of multiprofessional community-based courses that combine didactic and clinical education. Courses focus on community-identified needs and resources, health promotion and cultural diversity. Received School of Medicine award for innovation in medical education for these efforts.
1991 - 1995 Wright State University, Received Innovation in Medical Education Award for the development of a curriculum that brought together faculty from five disciplines for interdisciplinary faculty development: medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, allied health.
1992 - 1995 Wright State University, Developed a summer research program for medical students and served as a mentor to one student per summer.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES:
1990 - 1995 Center for Healthy Communities, Dayton, Ohio (Founding Director) Participants:  Four health professions schools, (medicine, nursing, allied health, professional psychology) and Department of Social Work, one hundred community and health care organizations, and several hundred residents from Appalachian and African American communities Funding:  Sixteen grants totaling more than $5M, many from highly competitive, nationally visible programs Outcomes:  One of the first centers of its kind nationally to develop a comprehensive, interdisciplinary community-academic partnership  Improved health care in the Dayton community through renovation of two community health centers, increased access to health care providers, and reduced number of emergency room visits  Community health advocate program assisted more than 2,000 clients  Twelve multidisciplinary classroom-based and clinical education opportunities developed for more than 2,000 students in seven disciplines Recognition:  Received five national awards for various Center programs  Recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as one of the top twenty models nationally for improving the health of underserved communities  Major contributor to Wright State School of Medicine’s receipt of the 1997 AAMC Award for Outstanding Community Service
1992 - 1996 Reach Out of Montgomery County (Ohio) (Founding Co-Director) Participants:  Montgomery County Medical Society, Montgomery County Health District, Wright State School of Medicine  Recruited 256 volunteer providers, including 136 physicians Funding:  One of twenty-two (of over 1,800 applicants) programs funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.($300K)  Incorporated into 501©3 that is sustained through ongoing funds from several community organizations Outcomes:  Provided care to 2,500 patients who have no insurance  Developed a system of available resources that focused on practicing physicians but also included hospitals, the health district, health and human service agencies, and other providers Recognition:  Recognized by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as a model program
1995 - 1999 Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) System (Statewide Director) Participants:  Statewide network including the state’s two medical schools, fifteen nursing schools, and several other health professions  Four regional AHEC centers with community boards Funding:  Obtained $6.5M in federal dollars and $2.5M in matching state dollars Outcomes:  Reorganized and streamlined a disorganized statewide system  Led the development of several statewide initiatives  Developed several interdisciplinary education programs  Expanded cultural competency training Recognition:  Moved system from being viewed as a problem by the federal program office to serving as a model for other states
1996 - 2002 Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) (Chair of Founding Board and Board Member) Participants:  In five years on the Board, CCPH grew to a national network of over 1,000 communities and campuses that are collaborating to improve health. Funding:  Organization became self-sustaining with annual operating budget of approximately $900K. Outcomes:  Viewed as leadership organization for partnership development between communities and academics by such organizations as Association of Academic Health Centers and Association of American Medical Colleges  Three national conferences  National mentor network  Series of technical assistance publications Recognition:  As founding chair, received national leadership award for community-academic partnership development
1997 - 2002 Center for Healthy Communities, Medical College of Wisconsin (Founding Director) Participants:  Three regional and state, twenty-six community, and five national partners; several hundred participants in programs  Center has statewide emphasis (rural and urban)  Involves MCW medical students and residents Funding:  In first four years, the Center obtained fourteen federal and foundation grants for approximately $2.6M  Several grants received high merit review scores Outcomes:  Programmatic Outcomes: - Community Health Advocate program - Cancer Prevention initiative in Milwaukee public housing - Health education programs for elderly - Rural and urban community-based, and MCW-based student programs - Marion Area Coalition for Healthy Communities (rural) - Partners for Progress public housing initiative - Community Health Curriculum for third and fourth year medical students  Employment Program for public housing residents at MCW and Froedtert Hospital - Community Outreach Partnership with Froedtert Hospital  Leadership role in development of proposed MCW Institute for Public and Community Health submitted to Blue Cross/Blue Shield Recognition  HUD grant for Community Outreach Partnership Center was ranked number one in the country out of one hundred sixteen applicants.  Selected for a site visit by the National Advisory Council of the Drug-Free Communities Program based on the strength of our Coalition. Recognized as a model medical school partnership with a community  Fifteen community partners provided oral and written testimony about the significance and outcomes of their partnership with the Center at the Blue Cross hearings conducted by the Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner.  Partners for Progress Program received Wisconsin Public Health Association Partnership of the Year award.
1999 - Present Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Program (Senior Associate Dean and Board member) Work with the President, Dean and Senior Vice President to provide leadership for the development and implementation of Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin. This program has three complimentary components: a statewide community-academic partnership program; biomedical, clinical, population health research; and, medical, and public health professional education. This program resulted from the conversion of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin to for-profit status. Work closely with leadership at The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health that also received funding. Provide leadership for the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program, the public and community health component of the endowment. Funding Approximately $300M endowment resulting from the for-profit conversion of Blue Cross/Blue Shield United of Wisconsin: 35% of the funds are allocated to public and community health community-academic partnerships, 65% to biomedical, clinical and population health research and medical and public health education. (The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health also received $300M.) Recognition  Have systematically solicited and incorporated public feedback and comments throughout the process. Comments about clarity, inclusiveness and integrity of the process have been consistently positive from Wisconsin citizens.  National merit reviewers have commented on the excellence and strength of the program.  Medical College of Wisconsin received the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Outstanding Community Service Award, national recognition for the College’s work, including the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program.  Dean received award from Wisconsin Public Health Association (2006) in recognition of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program.

Advanced the re-integration of public health and medicine and supported community-academic partnerships for health to advance the College’s core missions of education, research, clinical care and community engagement. Selected accomplishments include: -- Advanced the revision of the College’s mission from service to community engagement -- Fostered development of community-engaged faculty and community-academic partnerships -- Served in a leadership role for the College’s receipt of the Association of American Medical Colleges' (AAMC) Outstanding Community Service Award in 2005.
2008 - 2011 Medical College of Wisconsin Violence Prevention Initiative (Co-Director for Development Phase and Principal Investigator for Implementation Phase) Provide leadership as the Principal Investigator of the Medical College of Wisconsin Consortium Violence Prevention Initiative (www.mcw.edu/vpi.htm). The Consortium on Public and Community Health has invested $1.1M in the development and $8.2M in the implementation of the Violence Prevention Initiative through the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment. The Violence Prevention Initiative has two major goals: 1) decrease rates of violence in identified areas of Milwaukee and, possibly, greater Wisconsin; and, 2) strengthen community capacity to prevent future violence. Implementation of this initiative is planned to continue over a 10-year period for up to $20M. Outcomes  Created infrastructure, including 16 member community-academic steering committee and community stakeholders  Reviewed the academic literature, collected data on violence statistics, and compiled information on local and national violence prevention initiatives  Developed model that integrates research, community practice, and community knowledge and experience  Conducted community assessments and developed initial model with focus on youth violence  Awarded $8.2M over 5 years for the VPI Implementation Phase (launched February 2010): o Prevention and early intervention for youth aged 0-11 yrs in school-based settings o Influence/motivate youth aged 12-17 yrs in neighborhood-based settings o At-risk youth using a positive outcomes approach that will support youth’s successful transition into adulthood o Social settings and broader community level for its intervention that will emphasize community-capacity building
2009 - 2011 Institute for Health and Society (serve as Founding Director) Provide leadership for the development of a new interdisciplinary Institute for Health and Society with a mission “to improve health and advance health equity through community and academic partnerships,” and:  link medicine, public health, and social and behavioral sciences to foster and conduct research, education, urban clinical care initiatives, and community engagement that address community-identified needs; and  serve as a model for academic leadership in building partnerships among medicine, public health and communities. The Institute will accomplish this mission through training the next generation of health professionals; researching new discoveries in population and public health; developing innovative programs for clinical care delivery; strengthening community-academic partnerships; and, translating research findings into practice. The Institute launched in October 2010.

2012 - Present Office of Strategic Outreach (Vice President) Reporting to the President, provide leadership for the development of a new inter-institutional initiatives to advance the College’s core missions of education, research, clinical care and community engagement, including: -- development of the community medical education program -- lead the development of an inter-institutional Consortium to advance health care economics and innovation -- develop an inter-institutional partnership to encourage coordination and collaboration for community health initiatives -- lead collaborative processes for the development of other key institutional initiatives The Office of Strategic Outreach is home to the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Program. The Office of Strategic Outreach was established in July 2012.
