COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES:
1997 - 2003 Member, Prostate Cancer Advisory Committee, Texas Department of Health, Austin, TX – collaborative work with the Texas Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Texas Department of Health, Texas Cancer Council, Texas Medical Association in the development and dissemination of culturally sensitive educational interventions to improve informed decision making about prostate cancer screening with prostate specific antigen. These interventions are available at: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/chronic/publications.shtm. The interventions were then distributed nationally to all state departments of health by the Texas Department of Health.
2001 - 2003 Contributing Faculty, Texas State Prostate Cancer Action Plan, Texas Medical Association - development of strategies needed to implement goals utilizing state resources to promote prostate cancer prevention, screening, detection, education and support services. 2001 - 2003 Contributing Editor, Prostate Cancer Education and Informed Decision Making, Physician Education Module for Prostate Cancer Screening and Informed Consent, Texas Medical Association Physician Oncology Education Program Intercultural Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – content development for web-based and palm pilot-based interventions to educate physicians about culturally sensitive and low-literacy ways to promote informed decision making. This includes clinical cases that physicians can review on-line for CME credit to learn more about prostate cancer, screening, and treatment.
