ADMINISTRATION: :
Dr. Meurer has been director of the Institute for Health and Society for 4 years and has provided distinguished service to MCW and affiliated health systems for 21 years. During the past decade, John has served on advisory boards of the Children’s Hospital and Health System in health education, community services, and advocacy.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: :
Dr. Meurer was director and PI of a nationally renowned asthma coalition for 11 years. He has been a collaborative and transformative steward and leader of 10 Advancing Healthier Wisconsin projects. He co-chairs the Cancer Center Community Advisory Board.

EDUCATION: :
Dr. Meurer directs the MPH program and co-directs the medical student health system management and policy pathway. He co-directs the HRSA T32 primary care research fellowship which has been funded for 18 years. During the past 20 years, John has mentored and advised 18 undergraduate students, 58 medical students, 80 pediatric residents, 14 graduate students, and 9 faculty. He has been awarded outstanding medical student teacher four times. Monthly he leads continually updated, interactive seminars with diverse participants on health systems management, policy, and population health improvement.

PATIENT CARE: :
Dr. Meurer was medical director of the Downtown Health Center, an academic medical home for 7,000 low-income children, for 7 years with excellent clinical quality performance and resident training. He has been selected by peers as a Best Doctor in America for 8 consecutive years.

PERSONAL STATEMENT: :
Dr. John Meurer is Professor and Director of the MCW Institute for Health and Society since 2011. The mission of the Institute is to improve health and advance equity through partnerships and to integrate medicine and population health. The Institute includes research and graduate education programs in biostatistics (PhD program), epidemiology (PhD in public and community health), bioethics (MA) and medical humanities, and population health (MPH). John has achieved academic recognition for impact in community-engaged research. He continually contributes to exceptional educational and clinical programs.

RESEARCH: :
As PI, Dr. Meurer has been awarded $4 million from national sources and $18.5 million from local sources for leadership of public and community health projects. He has authored 48 peer-reviewed publications and 9 book chapters, presented at more than 35 national conferences, and has a national reputation for epidemiology, experimental trials, clinical quality improvement, and community-engaged research to address chronic health conditions. John leads the research expertise and methods modules in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and a research and education initiative in population health management. He serves on the internal science advisory boards of the Cancer and Cardiovascular Centers and reviews grant proposals for the Research Council.
