1993 - 2005 ESTABLISH A RURAL HOSPITAL IN NEPAL: Under my direction, our NGO built a 20-bed hospital and community health program where there was essentially no health care before. I served as the sole physician for a population of about 200,000 until 2000. The hospital (per prior plan) has been totally nationalized now. |
2000 - 2004 OVERSEE NATIONALIZATION OF TWO RURAL NEPAL HOSPITALS: two hospitals which our organization owned, were the first ever in Nepal to be effectively transitioned to total national governance and management. This came at a time of political upheaval, and guerilla warfare. |
2002 NEPAL NATIONAL MISSION HOSPITAL FUTURES COMMITTEE: worked as a member of a small working group to examine and plan the future of all 12 mission hospitals countrywide, and explore options for their future management. |
2003 - 2005 CHAIR OF NEPAL CHRISTIAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION: a network of all 12 mission hospitals (total 700 beds), which target underserved populations. |
2004 START NEW DIABETES CLINIC; Patan Hospital is a 250 bed referral mission hospital in the capital city. I established and staffed the first comprehensive diabetes specialty clinic in the country to deal with the rapidly growing epidemic of diabetes |
2004 STRATEGIC PLANNING IN INTERNAL MEDICINE: I was the co-chair of a committee to do strategic planning for Patan Hospital (250 bed) Internal Medicine Dept, transforming it from an arcane system, to a major referral and teaching service. |
2004 CO-CHAIR OF LAMJUNG DISTRICT HOSPITAL EVALUATION TEAM: We performed a formal (midterm) evaluation of the first precedent-setting government hospital to be contracted out to a non-government association |
CURRENT WORK: ACADEMIC PARTNER FOR MILWAUKEE CARES. A partnership with Milwaukee County Medical Society to develop a network of donated health services and commodities, and to coordinate this to give access to medical care for the uninsured poor of Milwaukee County. My task is to be a member of the leadership team, and be in charge of evaluation of the project. |
CO-CHAIR OF RURAL HEALTH SERVICES MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT GRANT: This is a 10 million dollar grant seeking to develop a training network of rural sites, and to select and train rural health workers using these sites. It is in its final stages of approval. |
