Abstract: Objective: To assess the level of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol among healthy Sudanese subjects. Methods: This is a cross sectional study that included 74 apparently healthy blood donors who attended the National blood bank during the period from January 2014 to April 2014. Verbal and/or written consent was obtained. Detailed clinical history was performed. Participants with no previous history of any chronic disease were included while those taking multivitamin regimens were excluded. A questionnaire was designed and included questions regarding the types and amount of daily diets consumed, it included the extent to which participants were exposed to sunlight. Blood samples were then tested to assess the level of 25 hydroxycholecalciferol using Euroimmune ELISA kit. The values of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol were defined as: Deficiency (<20 ng/ml), Insufficiency ( 20 – 29 ng/ml) and Sufficiency (30 – 100 ng/ml) according to the recommendations of the American Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidelines. Results: The study included 48 (64.9%) males and 26 (35.1%) females with a mean age of (32.4 ± 9.5) years. The Mean serum 25- hydroxycholecalciferol concentration was 41.127±15.6 ng/ml. The mean value was significantly lower in males 38.28 ± 13.8 ng/ml than in females 46.37 ± 17.6 ng/ml (P=0.032). Seventeen subjects (21.6%) had low vitamin D level. There were 11 subjects with vitamin D deficiency) <20ng/ml) while six subjects had vitamin D insufficiency (20-29 ng/ml). Conclusion: Low vitamin D level is common among healthy Sudanese subjects especially among males.
