Medical device use has grown exponentially in the last decade. Millions of devices are implanted annually in patients across the globe. These devices are used for a variety of clinical indications and have become an area of considerable interest in newer therapeutic approaches. Patients with these devices undergo procedures unrelated to the device, and understanding the function and programming can help avoid inadvertent patient injury or device malfunction. Due to the vast array of available technology, there may be uncertainty about how these devices should be managed perioperatively and during imaging procedures. A clear understanding of the indications
for associated perioperative risks and magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility of these devices is
needed. In this review, we provide guidance on appropriate perioperative care and management of cardiac and noncardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and drug delivery systems.
